Release date

What happened to Kingmakers?

It was delayed, not cancelled. After its Early Access date was pulled, Kingmakers posted nothing on its Steam news feed for most of a year, which is where the dead-game question comes from. The developers kept answering players on the Steam forum through that time, and the game came back with a gameplay deep dive and a playtest you can sign up for.

Delayed

Not cancelled. The studio is still posting, and the Steam page has a working playtest sign-up. What would change this: an announcement from tinyBuild or Redemption Road, not a quiet news feed.

The announcement that ended the silence put the sign-up front and centre:

Hit the new ‘REQUEST ACCESS’ button on the Kingmakers Steam page! We plan on rolling out a big wave of invites in an upcoming playtest soon, don’t miss your chance to try the game!

What the developers said while it was quiet

The game director, Paul Fisch, posts as a moderator on the game’s Steam forum. When players asked whether the studio had given up, he answered plainly:

Paul Fisch Game director, replying on the Steam forum

We are absolutely still working on it, also this game is in UE4, not 5.

I don’t understand why you think we would stop working on this game when it has over 1.5 million wishlists.

Yes, the game is 100% going to be released. Lots of people have been working on it for well over 4 years now.

He also explained why no replacement date appeared: the studio did not want to announce one it was not sure of. That answer is quoted in full on the Kingmakers release date page.

The playtests nobody outside saw

Testing carried on behind invitations. Before a December test, the director warned that it would be small:

~100players in that December test, by the director’s estimate
1.5M+wishlists, the figure he gave when asked if the game had been dropped

The playtest in December is not going to be open. It is going to be around 100 of the people who have signed up, but thousands of people have signed up for playtests, so I don’t want everyone to think they are going to be playing Kingmakers in December.

Is Kingmakers a scam or a fake game?

No. It is published by tinyBuild, a company that reports on its games to the London stock market, it has a Steam page from which nothing can be bought yet, and the studio has declined pre-order money. The director’s answers on footage, paid tester access and the AI question are collected on is Kingmakers real.

The practical point: the game has no public purchase or unrestricted download. The only documented way to get a build is an invitation through the Steam playtest, so a website offering a Kingmakers download, key or early copy is not an official route. The official places to find it are listed on Kingmakers on Steam and Epic, and why there is no pre-order is on the Kingmakers price page.
