The game

Kingmakers campaign map

The map Kingmakers has shown is a campaign screen headed Welsh Campaign: a map of Britain where you choose your next mission. Each mission is then played on a large map of its own, which you explore on foot or in vehicles, while the strategy view lets you command and build from above. A sandbox mode was mentioned by the publisher before the delay, but the Gameplay Deep Dive does not show one.

Mission maps

Missions are picked from a campaign map, and each one takes place on a big map that players can explore. What would change this: a developer post or video showing campaign missions sharing one continuous map.

What the campaign screen shows

The screen is on view for a few seconds, long enough to read. Its heading says Welsh Campaign and, under it, Choose Your Mission. Most of Britain is shaded red, a few areas on its western side are green, and the two markers opened here sit in the green. There is an Invite Friends button on the left. Two mission cards are opened in turn:

Both cards carry the same label, Territory Defence, and in the Deep Dive build both show a reward of 10 at Normal difficulty. The developers have not said whether these names and rewards are final. The same screen a moment earlier is pictured on Kingmakers story and setting.

What you do in a territory

As you claim territory, you’ll lay siege to enemy castles, establish settlements in hostile lands, and defend them against attacks from massive armies.

Redemption Road. Said in the tinyBuildGAMES video: Kingmakers - Gameplay Deep Dive

Soldiers run across a stone causeway toward a large castle under a stormy sky.

The narration ties the missions to the same ground: As you conquer territory, you’ll need to complete unique objectives in service of Owain Glyndwr’s rebellion. Holding what you take means building on it and walling it in, which is covered on Kingmakers base building. The rebellion you are fighting for, and where England and Scotland fit, is on Kingmakers factions.

Getting around a mission map

On foot

Loot as you go

As you explore each territory on foot or on wheels, you’ll also be able to loot English villages and forts.

On wheels

Cars and bikes

The same line covers vehicles. Which ones have been shown, and what can be called in from the present, is on Kingmakers weapons and vehicles.

Strategy view

At any point, you can switch to the strategy view. A minimap sits in the corner in both views.

Inside a long timber-framed building, a figure runs toward a glowing pickup labelled Copper, with bodies on the floor.

That frame is taken at the moment the narration speaks the looting line. The minimap was on the list of work in the game director’s pinned update, which named an improved top down minimap. How the two views fit together in a fight is set out on Kingmakers gameplay explained.

Is Kingmakers open world?

The studio’s own description of a mission map comes from the letter that announced the delay:

Every mission takes place in a massive map that each player on the server is free to explore

Redemption Road. From Steam announcement: A Message From the Developers

Before that letter, a player asked under a developer blog whether the game would be open world or only story missions. The reply from the publisher’s account:

Tira tinyBuild account, replying under a Steam announcement

There will be a sandbox mode as well as missions.

Comments on: tinyBuild reply on sandbox mode under Dev Blog #1, Steam comments
Shown: Missions chosen from a campaign mapThe Welsh Campaign screen above.
Stated: Large mission maps you can roamIn the delay letter, for every player on the server.
Said, not shown: A sandbox modeOnly in the reply above, which came before the delay. The Deep Dive does not mention it.
Not stated: All of Britain as one continuous mapNothing published describes the campaign that way.

Playing the map with friends

The Invite Friends button sits on the campaign screen itself, and in co-op each player commands a separate army. How many can join and what is shared is on Kingmakers co-op and multiplayer. The director says the tutorial is built into the first mission, and the first mission is what the demo was planned to include; see the Kingmakers demo.
