Kingmakers BiliBili World demo

The first time the public could play Kingmakers was at BiliBili World, a convention in Shanghai, on a build translated into Chinese for the show. The game director has said that build is part of the public demo the studio is working on. One outlet, Japan’s 4Gamer, played it on the show floor and described what it included.

What the studio said about it

Kingmakers attended BiliBili World over the weekend with our first ever public playable demo!

Why that build went to China, rather than to Steam, came up on the forum more than once. Two answers from the director:

Paul Fisch Game director, replying on the Steam forum

The most recent playtest had great scores from users, which is why we brought it to bilibili world.

We are currently working on the public demo. The version available at Bili Bili World was a part of what will be the public demo.

So the show build is the closest thing on record to what the downloadable demo will contain. Its planned contents and the missing date are on the Kingmakers demo page.

What the build included

From 4Gamer’s hands-on, in Japanese, summarised here rather than quoted. It is one reporter’s session with a convention build, so treat it as a snapshot, not a feature list.

Yes: Solo playThe show build was single-player.
Yes: A stronghold missionTaking strongholds such as forts and villages, amid infantry with spears, swords and bows and mounted cavalry.
Yes: A handgun and a shotgun to startThe player character entered the fight carrying both.
Yes: A shop mid-missionResources from defeated enemies could be spent there; the reporter bought a bolt-action rifle partway through.
Yes: Ammo from the skyCalling for ammunition dropped a supply pod from above.
Yes: A motorcycleFor getting around the map.
Yes: Orders to allied soldiersGetting your own troops to move with you was part of surviving, since the player dies to enough hits.
No: BuildingNot playable at the show. The reporter was told resources can be spent on construction in the game.

Reported by 4Gamer.net: hands-on report from BiliBili World (Japanese)

Two of those line up with what the developers have shown elsewhere. The motorcycle is the first vehicle in the Gameplay Deep Dive, and the shop paid for with loot is the same loop as the silver and gold sent back to the present; both are on Kingmakers gameplay explained.

What tinyBuild’s producer told the reporter

4Gamer also interviewed Anton Pavlov, an executive producer at tinyBuild. His answers reach English readers through a Japanese write-up, so they are paraphrased below and are best read as colour rather than commitments.

Multiplayer

Although the show build was solo, the game is mainly meant to be played together, up to four players, with an experience he compared to Helldivers.

Weapons

Guns ranging from old designs to near-future ones, with laser weapons under consideration, though not to the point of overdoing it.

Sieges

Asked whether you could use bombardment during a siege, he said of course, because they want to make something crazy.

The multiplayer point is worth setting next to the developers’ own wording, which calls the game a single-player experience that can be played entirely in four-player co-op. How co-op works is on Kingmakers co-op and multiplayer.

Where else it has been playable

No other public showing turned up in the announcements and forum replies checked. A few weeks after the show, asked whether players could try it at Gamescom, the director said:

Paul Fisch Game director, replying on the Steam forum

We do not currently have a booth at Gamescom. That could change, but as of now there is no plan for that.

The route toward playing it yourself is requesting an invitation to the Steam playtest; at the director’s latest word the test itself had not opened. Details on the Kingmakers playtest page.
